An FRP bridge providing trail access without harming the surrounding environment.

Project Overview

Two lightweight FRP trail bridges now carry hikers across the remote trail network surrounding Flegal Dam and Reservoir in Morgantown, WV. Areté Structures supplied both prefabricated crossings, which trail contractor Nature Trails LLC installed on-site. In this hard-to-reach terrain, the low weight of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer allows for easy transport and assembly.

The Two Bridges

Both of the FRP trail bridges have straight-end trusses, a 6.5-foot width, 54-inch safety rails, and an 85 psf pedestrian uniform live load rating. Meanwhile, each crossing pairs pressure-treated yellow pine decking with an olive green finish on the frame to blend into the surrounding landscape. The structures differ only in length, as Bridge 1 spans 50 feet and Bridge 2 runs 35 feet.

The Surrounding Environment

Encircling the waterfront, the 3-mile loop offers a window into the Appalachian ecosystem. The marshy banks and shoreline draw migratory waterfowl such as mallards and great blue herons, while white-tailed deer and wild turkeys roam the surrounding forest. The reservoir below offers excellent fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, and spotted bass.

Whether visitors are casting a line or walking the loop, these durable bridges ensure the community can safely explore the vibrant wilderness!
